What is Real Karate?

So many systems, which one is right? Which one is the Real Karate?
Well, let’s see. The Americans created their versions from Japan, for the most part.
The Japanese created their versions from the Okinawans, for the most part.
The Okinawans created their versions from the Chinese, for the most part.
Hmmm. Could their be no True Karate?
Well, there is, but it is not what you think. See, if you render Karate into simple moves based in physics, then you end up with MAtrix Karate, and from that one could extrapolate all versions.
That’s right, Matrix Karate isn’t a version. It is the scienctific breakdown of all Karate systems, and the result is something slick and sweet and easy to learn.
Don’t believe me?
First, check out the video right below. It shows me dissecting Pinan Five, maning sense out of a form that people say you have study for years to understand.
Next, head over to my site and take a free lesson. See if what I say is simple and easy to do…and makes sense. If it does, then you know you’re in the right place. The name of the site is Learn Karate Online, and it is the home of Real Karate.

Free Karate Lesson Online Nearly Done!

Been working hard on this Free Karate Lesson Online. Check out the video, it’s a good example of how I take things apart so you really can understand them, and then I’ll tell you about the free Karate…

I wanted to cover stances, blocks, footwork, and get the student to actually do a small form. The trick is to keep it simple, and make sure the steps are quick and easy.
After all, people want to do the bam and slam of UFC type sports, and I want to convince them that Karate, as an art, has more to offer.
You don’t want to wrestle on the street.
You want to maximize your blocks and strikes.
You want to build some of that famous knock out power that Karate power is famous for.
On this last, you can’t develop this while wearing gloves. Gloves stop the transmittal of energy, and thereby the hands are demoted to mere bludgeons.
Anyay, check out the free lesson at my site, Learn Karate Online. And it really is free. I don’t even ask for your address. I’m figuring that the benefits of the lesson will be so obvious that people will want to sign up for the newsletter, or just order right on the spot. That’s Learn Karate Online.

You Feel the Karate Power! You can Kick Butt! What Then?

Within the Karate Fist is Great Spirit

Karate makes power. Karate is power.

You do those forms and you feel the power start to take hold, you feel your body energize and get stronger and stronger. Finally, you have the power! You can explode with instant energy that is unstoppable. What now?

Well, what now is that you need to take a second step. The second step is not more power.

What? You don’t like that answer? But you’ve already got enough power…what do you need more for?

Let me ask you a question, if you had to fight ten guys, would you fight ten times as hard?

Nope.

You’d fight one tenth as hard for each guy.

So you don’t get more energy and violence and move faster and faster…that just wastes you. What you do do is learn to be efficient, to create the effct of more energy with less effort and less motion.

So when you get your black belt, start to look around. See if other arts will compliment this concept. Look at yourself, see if you can hit softer…and yet create greater effect. There are methods, you know. It is possible…you just have to break out of the method you’ve been trained in and…reverse your path.

Yeah,

you read that right.

Once you hit black belt…you have to  train in the opposite direction, get softer and softer, until people can hardly even see you.

I used to train with some of the toughest guys in the world, outlaw bikers. But they all bowed quickly and stood silent in the presence of the most polite man in the world. What he knew in gentleness was far greater than all their massive muscle.

Well, think about it, and while you’re thinking about Karate power, head over to Learn Karate Online.  If you have always wanted karate but never went for it, this is your chance. If you started, and, for whatever reason, dropped out, this is your chance.

Karate Secrets of the Universe

Karate Power

Karate Secrets...hidden for all to see!

Karate Secrets, eh?
Sort of interesting, you hear about secrets, but, when you get there (black belt?) you find there aren’t any.
You find that water is wet, rocks are hard, and life goes on.
And the real martial arts secrets deal with things like geometry and math and…school stuff.
Well, you actually start to apply basic physics to the body, and you find the good stuff.
I’m not going to go deeply into this, because I don’t want to give away the store. You’re going to find the answers on the Matrix Karate Course, or the Master Instructor Course.
But, the universe is based on the square, the triangle, and the circle.
Karate happens to be the square. It creates the base, the foundation, and a rock solid platform to build all arts on.
Unfortunately, people tend to look for the secrets, instead of building the foundation.
That said, when you do Karate you should be looking for ways to apply a triangle, perhaps to angulat the stance a bit, that sort of thing.
And you should be looking for places where the circle exists, in the performing of a block, smoothing out the edges of a punch.
So the secret of Karate is to simply sink your weight into the stance, learn how to generate the explosion of the tan tien, study how the body moves, and keep doing it until you…transcend. Until you slide a bit out of the body, until you see energy, and can appreciate it, and even start to use it. At that point you can shift arts, but you shouldn’t until then, or you won’t really see all the glorious karate secrets, and the martial arts secrets, sitting in plain sight for all to see.

Car Crash Karate…and I Thought I was Studying the True MArtial Art!

I thought I was studying Karate, but I really wasn’t. I was just breaking my body down, one punch at a time, and getting little benefit. Check out the video, then I’ll tell you how I broke through to real Karate.

I read stories of the old masters, and I wondered why I was totally flattened out, why I was in a plateau that never ended.
Eventually, I started getting headaches with every punch I threw. I’d throw a gentle punch so I could work out, but if I ever threw a hard punch…whamo! Instant migraine.
Don’t get me wrong, I was learning, learning all sorts of stuff, but I wasn’t making the big break through that the masters of legends made.
Finally, having had enough of the headache punches, I thought of my instructor. He had made the breakthrough, yet he wasn’t a huge blast of power, he was gnelte, and polite, and modest, and humble, and…hmmm.
So I thought about Karate, and something my instructor said…A tight fist is a heavy fist.
And the light went on.
I had been striking with all my power, tensing my whole body, exploding massive amounts of energy. He was like a noodle, flicking little jolts that incapacitated.
So I started putting my whole body in position, but tightening only the fist. Whole billboards of lights went on.
By tensing the whole body it was like I was crashing a car into a wall, again and again. But one doesn’t break down the wall of the mind, one slips through the chinks and comes out the other side.
Mind you, it wasn’t the snap of kenpo punches, it was the whole body of karate, but the body didn’t tense, it just lined up behind the fist.
The idea that Karate, or any martial art, is nothing more than a blast of energy and power and all that…is totally and utterly false.
I lost my headaches, I discovered ways of rolling power through my tan tien and snapping it. It was more shaolin than karate, but it was really just true karate, the karate that the masters of old, who had had more direct connection to shaolin, had practiced.
It was more tai chi chuan than karate, but it was really just true Karate.
It was so many things. It was energy made liquid, energy pulsed, energy gentle…there was so much potential here it is almost overwhelming.
It was more than body…it was an energy body that I lived in. Drop on by Learn Karate Online and sample a free lesson. Sample it carefully, because you’ll notice that I don’t move hard and fast, I move deliberately and with awareness. True Karate, and it is not longer a car crash.

Tales of the Kang Duk Won

His fists were large...as was his heart.

The Kang Duk Won I speak of was on The Alameda in San Jose back in the sixties. It was a Korean Karate Dojo of immense martial spirit.
The mat was dirty and ripped. Sometimes it seemed like there was more duc tape than mat.
The front window was broken, again, a testament to duc tape.
There was a hole in the roof in the dressing area. The toilet was tilted 15 degrees, there was no place to hang your…what?
Does it sound like I am complaining?
No.
I am remembering, and that as hard as I can.
There was magic there, you see.
The Hells Angels, and other bikers, came to study the Kang Duk Won for one simple reason…it worked and it was the best.
There was a wide variety of student, glass blowers to grave diggers to pilots to college students to…me.
There weren’t many schools back then, but people came from all over the bay area to study with an extremely soft spoken man. A man who could poke his finger into a board and leave a hole.
Of course, it’s gone now.
Replaced by a dress shop or something like that.
The bar across the street doesn’t see karate students come in to soften their bruises with liquid…just yuppie types whining in their beer. Not real men.
There are no longer twenty Harleys lined up in front of the school, and the air is no longer split by the thunderous kiai of a score of sweating, battered, energized maniacs.
Now it is peaceful, and that is a shame.
Political correctness? Ha! I laugh.
The truth is not political correctness, that is just a method for cowing people into voting politely.
The truth is sweat and bruises and blood. It is being young and not saying no. It is staying out too late and enjoying life with your friends.
Ahh, it has all been said before, but that’s okay.
There is a purpose to life, you see.
There is a spirit to be forged and that is in every man.
The Kang Duk Won is gone…but it will come again.
That is inevitable.
That is the magic.
Check out Learn Karate Online if you want some of that magic in your own life.

Real Karate, Real Freestyle, Putting Aside Fighting

Back in the sixties real karate instructors differed in their opinions towards freestyle. Yes, it was necessary to keep students in the door, but there was freestyle, and there was fighting. Check out the video, my student is really trying to stab me, and I use control instead of fighting to manage him. I’ll tell you about one of the wildest tournaments ever right below that.

My school went to a big tournament in San Francisco.

During one of the matches one of the brown belts jammed his finger, and the second bone on one of his fingers actually came out of the socket and slid over the third bone. The refs looked at it, said he had to go to a hospital and have somebody straighten it out. He wanted to fight, however, so he pulled it out himself and kept fighting.

Interestingly, in spite of this type of die hard enthusiasm, my instructor pulled the entire school out and went home. Well, he didn’t pull them out. He just gathered everybody together and said fighting had little to do with learning how to control an opponent through kumite. He said we were free to remain, and then he left. Everybody followed him.

He was right. Fighting is for people who don’t know the martial arts. A person who knows the martial arts controls his opponent. He predicts him, manipulates him, and does what he will with him.

That’s the difference, of course, between real karate and somebody who likes to fight, and that’s the difference between sport and a real martial art. Check out the variety of different Karate programs at Monster Martial Arts.

Why People Learn Faster After Doing the Master Instructor Course

I’m sorry, but there is always the question of quantity versus quality, and in the martial arts this translates as…you can teach the movements, but how do you teach the essence, the ‘chi’ to it all. This is a fair question, and here is what one student had to say about it.

“I’m in the middle of Al Case’s Master Instructor’s Course and I had a realization…This school has found the common denominator of what works in all other martial arts from ALL other places and times; focusing on those essences and strengthening them directly. Which would be why people can learn so quickly… Working on any martial art at its face value would work on these essences very little and it would take 3 – 5 or even 10 years of training to get what your school does in 6 months to 1 year!”

The common denominator of the martial arts is simple, and it is simply taught. Yes, you could study for a dozen years, learn all the moves, and a certain amount of chi would finally seep into you.

Or, you can just get knowledge and do it.

Thank you.

What Real Karate Is

First you learn to block and punch, go through some bruises, get excited about fighting, and that sort of thing.

If you are in a real system fighting starts to become secondary, you start working on silencing the inner chatter in your mind.

To concentrate on one thing, to the exclusion of extraneous thoughts in your head.

This is the real point of it all, can you get rid of so many thoughts that your head is silent all the time?

If your head is getting silent all the time, you are doing real karate. If it is not getting silent all the time, you are not.

This can be applied to other martial arts, but I found it easiest to perceive in Karate. Of course, that might just be me.

But it doesn’t happen in an art that isn’t a real art.

If you are interested in smooth and slick training programs that result in a silent head, come on over to Monster Martial Arts. It’s good stuff.

How to Put Mushin No Shin in the Karate Fist

Mushin no shin means mind of no mind. simply, you get rid of all the garbage going on in your skull, and you dedicate yourself to doing one thing, and one thing only. In this case, the one thing involves the use of the karate fist, and punch powerful beyond imagination.

Interestingly, attempting to understand mushin no shin can result in mystical experiences, insights of supreme clarity  and understanding the universe, and so on.

The reason is because when you get rid of the mind, and start working at a spiritual nature, you perceive the universe differently.  You perceive it without eyes.

That said, mind of no mind, can actually be expressed as ‘Time of no time.’ You start perceiving time between techniques, you see.

Now, when I first realized this, I stopped punching with muscle, and started extending my arm like it was a stick. I stopped grunting and snapping and powering up, and simply held the ground with my feet, and extended the stick of my arm (fist) through my opponent.

Man, it worked like a miracle. Right from the get go, I was having to tone down my techniques, they were just causing too much pain, and threatening to cause severe damage.

Check out this video of me and a candle from over a foot away, I am just using mushin no shin, and the arm like a stick…

Hitting without hitting.

Striking spiritually.

It all makes sense with the simple concept. Sometimes you have to go through a lot of work out to get the concept, but you shouldn’t have to. After all, if you can understand what I just said here, you should be able to do it.
