Why Karate is the Best Martial Art…

and What is Terribly Wrong with It

If you’re only here for the FREE Karate lessons….Click here!

There is no doubt that Karate is the best Martial Art! There is also something terribly wrong with it.

Seven Reasons Karate is the Best Martial Art!

  1. Karate is probably the most popular art in the world.
  2. Karate has some of the best self-defense techniques you will ever find.
  3. The forms are more than just calisthenics; they grow energy (chi) in many different ways.
  4.  It has standard training and techniques for many schools. You won’t get lost or lose ranking if you move to a different school, town, state, or even country!
  5. It has some of the best self defense techniques you will ever find. It is a fully rounded system including weapons, kicks, punches, throws, grappling.
  6. Karate develops the ‘zen’ mind, which makes superior people who other people look up to.
  7. For over a hundred years men, women and children have found it to be a major shift to their lifestyle, giving good health and long life.

Unfortunately, there are many things wrong with Karate. Let’s go through what has happened to Karate chronologically. I think you will find this history fascinating.

What Went Wrong with Karate!

making faster karate techniques

Many don’t know, but Karate was likely invented by a woman! A couple of hundred years ago a young woman named Fung Qiniang was doing her chores when a large, white crane settled next to her. She poked at it with a stick, the crane responded with wings and feet and pecks, and the art of White Crane was born.

White Crane kung fu developed into five systems. One of these systems is credited with being the source of Karate.

A Chinese sailor is shipwrecked on Okinawa. Living in a cave behind a cemetery, Chiang Nan came into contact with Ankoh Itosu. He taught Ankoh Itosu a form (Channan).

karate master pinanAnkoh Itosu developed Channan into five separate forms. He called these the Pinans. Later, they would be called the Heians.

The Imperial Bodyguards of Okinawa chose Karate for their training. The art was  well rounded and powerful.

In one startling incident a bodyguard takes a sword away from a samurai who was bothering a young woman.

Karate would also be the Martial Art of choice for Korea, and for Japan.

This was the height of Karate. It was still in the hands of the founders, and had become the most powerful martial art in the world. Unfortunately, bad things were about to happen to Karate.

Okinawa has been an important gateway to the orient for hundreds of years. Because of that, two different countries claimed ownership: China and Japan.

Japan decided to make a definitive statement about ownership by demanding that the King of Okinawa come live in Japan. King Sho did so, and he would remain in Japan for the rest of his life.

The Okinawan Imperial bodyguards now had no jobs. The person they were sworn to protect was gone. They disbanded and took on menial work.

karate systems

Master Gichin Funakoshi

A young school teacher named Gichin Funakoshi learned Karate. He was taught by the original founders of Karate. He begins teaching karate to school children. He alters the art for children, and for teaching the art to masses of people.

In the 1920s several Okinawan Karate masters decided to go to Japan.

In  one incident a karate master, Choki Motobu, went to see a match between ‘east and west.’ During the match the huge Russian? fighter threw out a challenge to any Asian willing to step into the ring with him.

Motobu stepped, and he one punched the Russian to win the match.

The newspapers went crazy, of course, for here was a hero to challenge the obnoxious west! Unfortunately, they didn’t have a photograph of Motobu. they did, however, have a photo of Gichin Funakoshi. So Funakoshi got the credit, and Motor went home.

Funakoshi became quite famous, and is responsible for the spread of Karate through Japan.

Back home, in Okinawa, the Okinawan masters who had taught him were not happy. They felt that Karate should remain an Okinawan property. Thus, they made a secret pact not to teach karate, and if they did teach the forms, not to show the true meanings.

karate masters

Were any of these karateka among the Okinawan Masters who made a Secret Pact to hide Karate?

Why? Well, would you teach your secrets to the people who had ‘kidnapped’ your king?

Time goes on, Karate becomes incredibly popular in Japan, and then World War Two happens.

The Americans, sucker punched in the beginning with Pearl Harbor, throw off the effects and end up dropping two atom bombs on Japan. They then do the unthinkable, military forces occupy the Land of the Rising Sun.

Americans are fascinated by Karate. Servicemen all across the country enter dojos and ask for instruction.

Now, do you think that the Japanese would teach the true art to the people who had dropped two atom bombs on them and then occupied their land?

Time moves on, and Americans return home and open dojos. Unfortunately, troubles beset the dojos from the start. The Ingenious Americans have several solutions.

Can’t make money? Sell contracts.

Need advertising? Put on tournaments.

American masses don’t like the way classes are taught? Change the art, make everything into fun and games for the discipline challenged masses.

charles atlas adDon’t know why a form is done a certain way? Change the form. Or, better yet, make up some bullshit technique that has NOTHING to do with the original purpose of the form.

Another martial art school opens up down the street, so what do you do? Take some comic book lessons, hire your brother in law, who read a book on the subject and then watched a documentary on it on Youtube, to teach that art for you.

Schools begin to advertise everything, anything to bring in the masses.

Nowadays you will see people who are world champions because they won a tournament in a small town in Idaho. These people teach with authority and charge lots of money.

Nowadays you see people teaching Karate, MMA, Krav Maga, Aikido, and whatever else they can fit into their storefront sign, regardless of whether they know anything.

And that is the state of Karate, all too often, in these here United States.

Watered down for children, hidden by secret pact, altered for commercialism, lumped together with other arts for commercial success, and on and on and on.

So, comes the question: if you are studying karate, are you really learning real Karate? Or are you learning a watered down hybrid from a guy who learned it all off youtube?

Bust his armor! Spank him with his own sword!

Bust his armor!
Spank him with his own sword!

And, comes the question: if you want to learn the real karate, the armor busting sword stealing, samurai spanking art of a couple of hundred years ago…where do you go?

The interesting solution here is that you CAN fix your martial art. You can fix that watered down, hybrid, piece of junk and make it like it was supposed to be.

And you don’t have to go anywhere to make it happen.

Heck, you can even learn it at home, and be assured that you are getting something unique.

Now, there are two points here, people who have learned and want to make it better, and people who want to learn. Interestingly, the solution is the same for both types of people.

First, however, let me explain who I am, and why I am uniquely qualified to provide the solution.

I began Karate in 1967. That’s over fifty years ago. I became an instructor, wrote the training manual for my school, and then something interesting happened. I had to use my art.

No, I didn’t have to beat anybody up. I just had to break into my car. I had locked the keys in it and decided to break the window to get in.

Like a story, it was a rainy night, I stood and stared into the warm car. The radio was even on.

I took a horse stance, I delivered my most powerful weapon, a side kick, to a window…and bounced off.

I kicked it again and again.

This was an OLD car! The gals should have shattered like an egg in a blender.

Instead, I gave up. Couldn’t even break a piece of glass. My art didn’t work.

A short time later I found the Kang Duk Won.

kang duk wonKang Duk Won means ‘House for Espousing Virtue.’ It was one of the original kwans in Korea, and it was a version of karate that bypassed Japan. It hadn’t gone through the Japanese system, but had been learned from Kanken Toyama, who was a classmate of Gichin Funakoshi’s, and who had learned from the original founders of Okinawan Karate.

This is not the ‘American Kang Duk Won,’ which is popular these days, but the original Kang Duk Won, as taught by the founders.

That was the karate I learned.

Why everybody else was learning how to play at tournaments, I was learning how to do the real forms, the real techniques.

I’ve got possibly the earliest form of karate in the world.

After I achieved my black belt, in 1974, I began dissecting karate. I separated it from the style developed by my teacher. I began searching for the purest techniques. I ransacked other styles. I watched people, met instructors, read everything I could.

I began studying other martial arts, all the while trying to make sense of it all, trying to figure out how they all fit together.

Eventually I became a writer for the magazines.

Then I began writing training books, producing martial arts instruction videos.

And I began working on the net.

Thus far I have written over two million words, written over 40 martial arts books, produced hundreds of hours of martial arts videos.

But my main contribution to the martial arts is something I call matrixing.

I actually began matrixing in the 80s, long before the movie.

Matrixing is a form of logic. It is not a martial art, but a way of putting logical order to the martial art. For you to understand this I have to explain something.

The martial arts are basically a ‘put together.’

A collection of techniques preferred by a teacher. A guy has lots of experience, likes a certain set of techniques, so he teaches them. This becomes a system.

There are lots of systems.

If you have followed me thus far, if you understand what I have written in this piece, then you understand that these systems that were made up, even though they were often effective, have been turned around, mixed up, combined with other arts, and become more and more confused.

A fellow teaches Karate, with kenpo forms, Krav Maga weapons, Taekwondokicks, Jujitsu throws, and calls it Karate.

It is a bunch of made up arts made up into another made up art!

And there is no logic to it.

matrix karateMy original analogy for this:

You want to learn how to add numbers. So the teacher tells you the numbers 6, 3, egg, 9, fruit, cat, 23, and Zamboni.

You are NEVER going to learn to add! You are NEVER even going to be able to count.

And that’s what the martial arts are like! A form from Karate, a technique from kenpo, a word from China, a ritual from India, a weapon from Albuquerque, a…get it?

Yet you will learn it. A human being is capable of the most incredible (but odd) feats.

But what if your teacher gave you 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7,  8, ,9…you would soon figure out ten, and shortly after that you would be adding things, then subtracting, multiplying, and even dividing!

That is what matrixing is like.

Let me pause here, and offer a little win from one of my students…

Before I started Al Case Martial Arts I was very shy and though not completely unable to fight, I didn’t really KNOW what I was doing. I had gone to a few other classes before Al’s. In one of these classes the first two hours was actually them teaching me to do a cart-wheel into a jump-kick (no joke). Though this can look very pretty, it really has little if any true application. I mean, I guess you could do a cart-wheel to get out of danger and then jump kick a random guy to your left. But then there’s always the question, “Why not just step to the side?” This is the kind of martial arts I like to call, “The Jump Kick Variety,” (the kind with little TRUE application.) So, as you may have guessed I stopped going to this class and began my search for something that could actually do SOMETHING. And sure enough I found it. And sure enough it could actually do something. In fact it taught me more in five minutes then all of the other classes I’ve ever taken. Within a year and a half I had Black Belts in TWO DIFFERENT ARTS!!! This was able to be done because Al Case has discovered some of the Basic/Basics that most instructors don’t REALLY EVEN KNOW. When I found out how and why I was doing certain moves, and what really made them work, It just put in the missing piece to making the martial arts really applicable! These are the things that the Best martial artists in the world JUST SIMPLY KNOW. But the only problem is that they don’t know how to teach it. Well, Al Case actually discovered the EXACT Technology on how to teach the martial arts so you can learn it fast and easily! As well as the real reason some things work and some don’t. And the real cause of failure in the martial arts. But the really amazing part about all this, is the amazingly LOW PRICE. I can promise that for the value of the knowledge and ability gained by one class alone, there is not a better system on EARTH.

Now, this is a REAL win! I did not phoney it up, I am not writing some sort of advertisement and who cares if I’m honest! This really is what one of my student’s really said…and I have about 600 pages of wins like this.

I have NO complaints!

Nobody, ever since I started pushing Matrixing back in the eighties, who has actually done one of my courses, has ever disagreed or found fault with what I am doing.

So, let’s get down to it. What am I saying here?

karate kickboxing courseI am saying that if you study Matrix Karate you will learn a type of karate that has NEVER been seen before.

This style of karate undercuts ALL other styles of karate.

More important, Matrix Karate IMPROVES all other styles of karate.

And the reason for this is simple: once you understand the logic of the martial arts, then you understand the martial art.

No more confusion about techniques. No more questions about forms.

Everything just unravels.

The mystery carefully constructed over hundreds of years, through secret pact, stupidity and incompetence, just goes away.

You suddenly know what karate is, what it is for, how to use it…everything.

ANY style of karate you may have studied suddenly becomes easy to do, twice as effective.

ANY style of karate you want to learn becomes quick and easy. Not four years to a black belt, but a handful of months. And I am not kidding about this. I have taught enough people, seen enough results, that I can make this statement definitely.

If you learn Matrix Karate all other forms of karate become easily understood.

In fact, after learning Matrixing other forms of karate become quite handy textbooks of advanced techniques. The real stuff, used to take away a samurai’s sword and spank him with it, starts to pop out at you.

There is only one problem.

Most people have invested time in their brand of karate. They are loyal to their brand of karate. They even think that if they learn something else they are somehow betraying their art.

When the actual fact is that you should be studying anything and everything you can so that you can put karate into context, into focus, and REALLY make it work.

So, knowing the situation that you are in, I’m going to make you a special offer.

I have been selling Matrix Karate for $30 (downloadable) and $40 (actual disks).

  4. Oh, Lard. I’m old. If I wasn’t so handsome it would be a tragedy, how old I am. Maybe I should be asking how young are you? Change the subject, get out from under the spotlight. Stop thinking about my coffin. Well, I was born in 1948, so you can do the math, but let me give you a piece of advice…don’t ever, ever, ever, EVER get old. It’s just not worth it. But if you choose not to heed my advice, let me give you another bit of advice…study the martial arts every single day. Never let a day pass without studying. If you’re lying in your death bed with the family gathered and sobbing, if you know you have only a few seconds of life left, have somebody say some lines from a Bruce Lee movie, or maybe give a little Kiyai when you leave your body. You do that…and your life will be worth it. Now, youngster, ten push ups, then do your forms. Signed ~ old doddard Al
