Mugger Speaks Out for Self Defense!

Self Defense for a Mugger!

Okay. I’m a mugger! Got to earn a living, and I usually earn it on shmucks like you. I simply come up behind you and conk you with a baseball bat and take all your money while you’re tossin’ the ball in snoozeville.

My favorite tool is a knife. A sword ain’t bad, but the man in blue might arrest me if he sees me with one. Heck, he might even shoot me!
Don‘t want that, man.
So I like a knife. You sneak up, stick the blade up against the throat, and whisper, and the fool fills his pants and empties his wallet at the same time!
Hah!

gung fu bookAnyway, one thing I hate is people who scream.
I mean, can’t a guy get a little peace and quiet on the job? Can’t ya just dry up and give me your wallet? Why do you have to make all that noise? Don’t you know it tends to draw a crowd? And I don’t want no crowd around me when I work. Ya know?

And, talkin’ about it, I also don’t want nobody throwin’ stuff at me.
Ya know, I had a guy the other day threw a bunch of pennies, right out of his pocket, fer Chrissake, threw some pennies at me and yelled! Scared me half to death, and one of those pennies actually hit me in the eye! Man, I was runnin’ and cryin’ all at the same time, and, let me tell you, it didn’t feel good!
So knock that crap off! No throwin’ stuff or makin’ a bunch of noise.
I mean, gimme a break, eh?

But the worst thing ever is when I’m tryin’ to mug somebody, and he has a knife hisself!
I mean, if a guy like that sees me coming, and he’s got a knife in a slick, little holster under his jacket flap, or something like that, he might get it out and actually stick me! Can you believe the nerve of the guy?
And what would the other muggers think if it was a …(choke)… a girl that stuck me!? Man, the shame!
I mean, lay off on that fightin’ back stuff. I just want your money, I don’t want no trip to the bone factory!

So there ya go, just a couple of things that tick me off, and that I don’t want you doing. Keep ‘em in mind cause it’ll help me do my job. Keeps me off welfare, ya know?

Did This Guy Use Karate to Handle an Attacker with a Shotgun?

Do You know a Shotgun Defense?

Interesting video below, of a fellow taking a shotgun away from a mugger. But, I’ve got a few questions about it.

There are several outpoints that must be considered.

First, do security cameras have audio? I haven’t seen any, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t. Still, why would audio be necessary at this lonely location?

Second, does the cocking of the shotgun sound real? By that, I mean that it sounds like there is nothing being chambered. I haven’t cocked every shotgun there is, but it does make me think.

scattergun

Loaded or not? Martial Artist of not? Hmmm?

Third, it looks awful easy. The bad guy doesn’t struggle. So the technique is either perfect, or the bad guy didn’t really want to shoot anybody, or…it’s fake.

Finally, why doesn’t the fellow being mugged just shoot the attacker in the butt?

Now, these are four good questions, and I wonder.

On one hand, the fellow being mugged is the coolest dude since ice cream was invented. Probably studied a variety of arts, and the technique might be tachi dori, or something out of Krav Maga, or whatever.

On the other hand, it is a marketing ploy.

I haven’t called the number on the screen at the end, and maybe I should. But I guess Ir eally want to believe that this is the goods, and that the fellow really is a class martial artist.

I’m sort of interested, so feel free to comment and let me know if you think the guy is a class martial artist or not.

How to Knock Yourself Out with a Karate Kick

Karate Kick KO!

Knocking somebody out, with a karate kick or a kung fu punch or whatever, takes a bit of practice. Getting knocked out, be it by Kenpo chop or taekwondo ax kick, is probably not a good thing. But knockign yourself out with a karate kick…that has to be low on the bucket list.

Karate kick
I was playing baseball with a bunch of guys one day, and we were all horsing around, having a good time, and in between plays I was practicing my rear spin heel kick.

A spin heel kick is not a normal kicking technique. For a rear kick, or spin kick, you turn and drive the foot. But for a spin heel you keep the leg straight and let the foot go on a long arc.

Anyway, we are fooling around, and I’m out at second base spinning in the dust, and the dust wasn’t too stable, and suddenly my foot gave way and I fell on my, uh, fanny.

Oh, I wasn’t knocked out, that comes later, but I was laughed at. And I did grow an appreciation for the art involved, the balance needed, and so on.

Knockign himself out with a kick honors actually goes to my sensei. On a beautiful summer day he was outside practicing his jump spinning kicks, and he put together a leaping beauty of a kick…right under a low hanging tree.

That’s right, he jumped and spun, and smacked his head on a low flying branch, and it was lights out in skullville.

About a half hour later one of the students found him, staggering around and rubbing his head. He was dazed and confused, didn’t know what had happened, and we had to tell him.

Yes, you were practicing jump kicks under a tree. And the tree won.

And that is the real skinny behind how you can knock yourself out with karate kick.

Should Karate Student Learn Pa Kua Chang

Marital Arts Cross Training…Karate to Pa Kua Chang

Well, we all believe in cross training, but isn’t karate and Pa Kua Chang trying to mate the dog and the cat? I mean, they are different martial arts, are they not? One is the straight line, and the other is the circle, and never the two should meet. Right?

I like to learn ALL Martial Arts!

Well, an interesting bit of martial arts history might be appropriate at this time.

Karate was put together over hundreds of years on Okinawa. There was a heavy Chinese influence on this development.

One of the four major karate systems that came to Okinawa fairly intact and wasn’t put together, was an art called Pan Gai Noon. This art became known as Uechi Ryu.

If you examine the history of Uechi, and of Pan Gai Noon, you come up with three distinct animal (concepts). These are the tiger, the crane, and the dragon. And, you come up with the influence of several Chinese martial arts, among which is…pa kua chang.

So, should a karate student study Pa Kua Chang? He should if he wants to know more than the surface techniques. He should if he wants to delve into the background and history and actual source of his art.

And, the pa kua chang student might be advised to learn karate. After all, to know only the circle is to know only half the art. One should know both the circle and the line if they are to consider themselves complete.

The true martial artist must know both the circle and the line, the hard and the soft, both the internal and the external, if they want to make it to the top of the martial arts world.

This, incidentally, is one of the reasons I wrote The Neutronic Motors of Pa Kua Chang. To help martial artists to be complete. The book is a study in how to develop chi power int he martial arts. To be exact, it is a complete system, and it is the absolute fastest and most efficient method for building chi power in the world.

So, if you are a karate student, you should study pa kua chang, and vice versa, and my book is a wonderful way to make this happen.

Zen Karate and the Mind of No Mind

Zen Karate, Easy to Do…Too Easy

I love the concept of Zen Karate, having a mind of no mind, but not many people really understand what it is.

zen karate

Zen is like saying knowledge. having no mind, that is like being focused on one thing, to the exclusion of all else.

The phrase the Japanese came up with to describe this is mushin no shin, or ‘Mind of no mind.’

Really, it is you, the spirit, looking out at the world, dealing with the world, without having a mind to get in the way.

Sounds odd, eh?

But what is the mind?

What are you?

You are awareness.

The mind is…not.

I’ll let you cogitate on what exactly the mind is, but while you’re doing that, let me tell you a story.

I was doing a kung fu exercise with a fellow one time. We were both heavy into karate, but our instructor taught us this thing called sticky hands, and something interesting happened that day.

We were standing, face to face, our arms entwined, and I decided to equalize my awareness, to be equaly aware of both sides of the body.

I fed my awareness out my arms, being careful to put exactly the same amount of awareness into each arm. As I reached the fingers I suddenly popped out of my body.

I was sitting there, my awareness like a lighthouse beacon shining down on my partner.

He, of course, felt it.

He tried to move, but he couldn’t, I had taken control of his body.

Problem, I had taken so much control I couldn’t move. We were stuck in exercise, unable to have motion, a vast energy pouring through me.

Finally, I got scared, and i snapped. I punched my partner in the chest. The hand flew out, he flew back and hit the wall, and POP, I was back in my body.

“What the hell did you do?” He exclaimed, rubbing his chest. He later told me he had never been hit that hard in his life. But I knew that. I had hit him from outside the body, and with more energy than the body is capable of containing.

That was just one of the times I experienced the state of ‘no motion, of not having a mind in and through the martial arts.

Interestingly, I will say that in this specific instance it was a combination of karate forms training, and the softness of the kung fu exercise, that enabled me to do it.

Through one or the other I would not have reached it, but through both…yes.

That is one of the problems of the martial arts, they have become compartmented, rueld by true believers, and people lack the ability to put them together. Putting them together is one of the benefits of Matrixing. Matrixing enables one to combine arts logically and quickly. There is no other technology in the world that can do that.

Anyway, that is just one of the experieces I have had of Zen Karate and the mind of no mind.

Top Three Karate Tricks of All Time…and Boy are They Nasty!

Check out the video, then I’ll tell you my favorite three Nasty Karate Tricks. They’ll help you end any fight.

The first one is to break the fingers. Somebody grabs you, you grab their finger and bend it back and break it. Nothing fancy about this…just break it. What? You want to control politely? What if the guy has a friend? What if he jumps back and pulls out a gun? When push comes to shove and a real fight is about to pop, snap his finger and then do number two.
Number two…kick him in the apples. Short, sweet, and to the point, a kick in the cojones will bend the largest mugger at the knees, and, got to admit it, there is nothing more sweet than watching some bad ass doofus puke his pudding.
Now, that all said, save this trick for when your life is truly in danger, you can’t use it on the mat, or to control your drunk Uncle Bob…poke him in the eye. I mean, stick your finger in his eye up to the knuckle.
You can see why I say hold back on this one until your life is truly at stake. Crippling, maiming, putting some guy in the dark for his life…it is cruel punishment.
Anyway, those are my three tried and true favorite Karate tricks, and they will work every time. Check out Learn Karate Online if you want some great training tips, strong punches, and…hey, there’s even a free ‘mini-lesson’ on the site!

How to Toughen Your Fists with Karate Techniques

hard fist

Toughen your Fist to have The Hardest Punch!

One of the neatest training devices is a simple box of sand. You make a spear hand and thrust downward. As time passes, you get deeper and deeper, and you learn how to be ore intense and demand that extra inch out of yourself.

Interesting, this is a method that is supposed to be used for sharpening knives. If you want a real sharp knife,  theory goes, you thrust knife down, and the sand whittles away at the edge.

Mind you, I have not played with this, so use at your own risk. And let me know if your knife gets damaged. I’ll put the results in ablog.

Anyway, your hand won’t get damaged by thrusting it into a bucket of sand. As a matter of fact, the fingers will become able to stand impact, your spearhand will start to shine, and you will have martial arts weapon of unusual intent.

Of course, your hand might look  a little gnarly, but that’s okay. Just hold up your hand and put a crazed expression on your face and nobody is going to want to fight you. Grin.

Have a great day, and if you want some great tips on toughening the hand, specifically how to have the hardeat punch, check out the book I’ve written. It is called The Punch, and it is at Monster Martial Arts.

Win #4 Do You Know How to Use Karate in a Fight?

Before we start, here’s a form I’ve been doing for a while. Works pretty good, and I can actually use the form in freestyle.

I love this win, because a lot of people don’t really know how to use Karate in a fight. They think it is forms, a bunch of dry exercises, posing. Man, Real Karate is definitely not that!
We used to do the forms to get strong and fast, then we took those suckers apart and figured out how to use them on the mat.
There was a fellow back then, name of Ron, used to clean up the mat with me. I asked him how valuable forms were to him. He started using Kata techniques on me in freestyle! Imean, right out of the form, and I was double ass kicked! Sucker knew how to fight, and it was because he knew how to understand the forms.
Here’s the win from a guy I taught forms to.
I now know what to do if I get in a fight and how to avoid a fight. I am very confident in what I am doing. I feel great about my skill and efficiency. I loved this course because it was short and concise with an end result of certainty and knowledge of martial arts. It was great. Love–Herb S.
Do you see it? Not cocky, not a bully, just confident. That’s what realknowledge does for you, that’s what real karate does, and if you know how to read the forsm then you’ll know how to use karate in a fight.
You guys take care, and I’ll see ya over at MonsterMartialArts.com

Win #3 Wimp learns Real Karate, Becomes a Man!

Don’t you just love my titles? Wimp Learns Real Karate. Ha!
The funny thing is, probably over 80% of us have the wimp image of ourselves. I don’t know what did it to you, but high school did it to me. I went in brazen and smart, and came out wondering what the hell life was about. It took Karate to return me to my natural state.
Your natural state is tough, funny, smart, you have friends, and your girl is kick ass.
No, I’m not being funny, that’s the way you are. If you don’t know it, read the win right below.
I now have the ability to be there (or here) and defend myself against attack and this is not something I was able to do when I came in here.
I also have the understanding of how the body should be working and the physics involved.
Thanks
Love,
John

That’s what it is all about. It’s not about trophies or being tough, it is about being smart and competent. I’m going to try and upload a ‘wimp’ ad from a few decades ago. If you don’t remember it, take a good look at it. These are the ads that started us on the road to redemption, on the road to self discovery, on the road out of high school and bullyism and experiences that try to chip you down.
You want to learn Real Karate, come on by my site. It’s a funky site, but it’s a blast. MonsterMartialArts.com
See ya.
